St. John United Church of Christ

Tidbits from Toni:

Each year after Easter we read in lessons from Acts how the early church was formed. It seems like we might need to look at the whole witness of scripture from Genesis to Revelation to see that the intention of God was to “form a people”, those who would be a light to the whole world.

The church in recent years has had greater emphasis on individual salvation rather than a community of faithful followers. God seems to be intent, as we read the scriptures, to build a community defined in new loyalties and based on transformation. In Acts, during the Great 50 Days of Easter, we read how the early followers were not defined by old categories but were united in witness to the resurrection in a way of life that demonstrated resurrection practices. We learn of their conversion from individuals who followed Jesus to a new community of faith.

It is in community that the life of the church is nurtured and sustained. With a deep sense of community, believers are more able to sustain the conversion experience. The core purpose of the church is to be a community that sustains on-going change and transformation as we grow in the likeness and image of God. When we read the lessons in the Book of Acts we might notice that it is not about individual conversion experiences but it is about God’s work to form a people; to call the new community to faithfully share life. God’s grace was upon them all.

The practice of generosity has roots in worship that transforms, it flows from what God has done and is doing. Strong communities create security and foster a feeling of abundance. Building Christian community contributes to people’s sense of security, well-being, and capacity for generosity. We have many opportunities to build the sense of community at St. John. You are invited to take part in Bible study, prayer circle, prayer chain, groups that are involved with the mission of the congregation, fellowship after worship, and special events. Engage in real conversations that go beneath the surface. Be intentional to build community here and now.

    God’s peace, Rev. Toni
