Tidbits from Toni:
Milestones in Ministry are sometimes measured at an anniversary. August 1st notes the start of my second year as your pastor. We have gone a mile together on our mutual journey in ministry, a good start with many miles to go (I hope). I think the biggest joy I feel is the comfort that some of you express at having your own minister at times of crisis. When I offer pastoral care at funerals or at bed-sides I feel a special bond with you.
We have started some on-going programs through The Worship Committee and The Church Growth Committee. One new Bible Study group has been formed. Two efforts to extend care and concern were handled by The Special Projects Committee. Other good things are happening with more ideas yet to be implemented. Confirmation classes are in process for six of our young people; with lessons, projects, and requirements.
It seems that there is a "general positive attitude" among members of the congregation. One great aspect is the building of lasting relationships. There is much still to be done as we, together, try to discern where our journey will take us. Sometimes you might need to encourage me to slow down and other times you might heed my encouragement to hurry up. Either way, we are together . . . . and we are headed in a direction that seems to be God pleasing and meeting the needs of today's membership. I thank God for you and I appreciate how you have helped this first year seminary graduate to learn to be "your minister".
God's peace, Rev. Toni
Recycling of aluminum cans netted a profit of $38.40 for the Youth Budget. You may place your aluminum (not tin cans or other metals) in the bin by the shed in the parking lot. You may put them over the top of the door if necessary. This effort has a dual purpose: fund raising and recycling.
August 10, Christmas will be celebrated out of season with what had been called Christmas in July. We will dedicate the new and repaired Chrismons and sing carols. Invite a friend for this unusual celebration. The normal liturgical calendar for Christmas is twelve days, from December 25 to January 6. People have complained that that is too short a season for so many beautiful hymns and songs.
The UCC is asking congregations to consider making an extra special contribution to the Christmas Fund. Record breaking prices have had a negative impact on the denomination's ability to meet the special needs of low income individuals that have served the church, both retirees and those serving now with low paying jobs. In the past many retired clergy had no retirement benefits offered and often received their salaries by means of produce and an occasional chicken. They have little or no reserve to meet extraordinary expenses. So many requests have recently come to the Pension Board that there is a 300% increase in needs over what was anticipated. If you wish to contribute please designate it on your offering envelope or on a note with your regular donation to the church.
Confirmation classes resume August 24 after the summer recess. Students, mentors, and other leaders will meet at 12:30 for fellowship. Project three is due August 31. Unit 2 classes focus on scripture, this is a difficult unit. Please pray for the class and offer your support to the students.
August 31 is the day of the joint service that we hold with Youngblood Presbyterian. They host the worship this time. It may be at Youngblood or at St. John depending on how repairs and remodeling on their building progress. We will keep you informed where to worship that Sunday.
